Create your first cluster

A cluster runs in one of your cloud accounts. You pick where, how big, and Rockslab builds it — about 6 minutes.

6 min needs a cloud account Open Create cluster ↗

Before you start

You need a connected Hetzner Cloud account — see Connect a cloud account. Your organization must be Active; while it is In review the button is locked.

Steps

  1. 1

    Open Infrastructure and press + Cluster

    Or press + Cluster on the account card — the account is then already chosen.

  2. 2

    Choose where and how big

    Pick the account and the location. Add pools: each pool is a group of identical machines. Availability next to each type shows whether the provider sells it right now.

    Create a cluster
    test1 fsn1 env=dev
    workers · 3 × cpx31 autoscale 3–8 €174 /mo
    Cancel Create
    Create cluster — one pool of three cpx31 in fsn1
  3. 3

    Press Create and follow the progress

    The row of the cluster shows a progress bar with phases. You can leave the page — the operation keeps running and appears in Activity.

Or with the API

The cabinet's own API takes the same request. Each call is a POST of JSON to cloud-api.rockslab.io/bedrock.v1.CabinetService/<Method> with your API token:

curl -X POST https://cloud-api.rockslab.io/bedrock.v1.CabinetService/BuildMyCluster \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $ROCKSLAB_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"orgId":"o-jpqv6bfnj0","accountId":"a-kvpr5k0ct9","name":"test1",
       "inputs":{"region":"fsn1"},
       "pools":[{"name":"workers","count":3,"serverType":"cpx31","location":"fsn1"}],
       "idempotencyKey":"first-cluster-1"}'
Response 200
{
  "workflowId": "build-cluster-…",
  "runId": "…",
  "nextStep": "Building — follow the operation in Activity.",
  "operationId": "run-7xk2…"
}

The ids are examples. Send the same idempotencyKey again and you get the same build back, not a second cluster — handy when a script retries.

What you get

A Kubernetes cluster with the platform base installed (Cilium, Flux, ingress), a domain from your zones and a kubeconfig on the cluster page. How to reach it with kubectl: Reach your cluster.
